Home Office decision
The Home Office announced their response to the consultation on extreme pornography
at the end of August 2006. Hard work by backlash teams rebutting misleading
Ministerial and civil service spin soon caused press coverage to take issue
with the government line. A summary of the arguments is now available.
Broadly speaking, the government intends to make it an offence
to view images that are pornographic, and explicit, and for "real or appearing
to be real acts" of serious violence, or necrophilia, or bestiality, where
"by serious violence we mean appears to be life threatening or likely to
result in serious, disabling injury".
The Home Office admitted "a majority of individuals responding
opposed the proposals".
The government says it "will legislate as soon as parliamentary
time allows".
